thoughts running through my mind
i cannot understand why, during my intense reading of Peter Birk's article on Mistake of Law, random thoughts keep running through my mind. it is as if the ghost of blogger is inducing me to pen an entry.
and so here am i, in the library, after finishing the article, writing on the irrelevant yet endearing thoughts. it is funny how oyu just think of such things when you are doing just the opposite: something as academically exhausting as the Mistake of Law assignment for Restitution.
Thought number 1:
The late Professor Peter Birkswrites very well. i actually enjoy reading his legal thoughts on mistake. it is written like a story, a novel with plot and an exciting adventure which has not seen its end. the remaining chapters are for up and coming restitution scholars to complete. but in the field of law, it is perhaps unrealistic to say that there can ever be an ending, for the law is never static. it is always moving and changing tp suit our needs.
the subject of restitution is amazing. the thought process that goes through the academics and the judges is mind boggling. i cannot imagine having a normal conversation with them. 'eh, wanna eat char kway teow or cheeken lice?' cant fathom what kinda answer they would give me. a 10 page analysis of wht cheeken lice is better maybe.
speaking of acadamics, i met my resti tutor Tang Hang Wu and my Evidence tutor at the thinking corner earlier in the day. they were having lunch i suppose. i appreciate them a lot. they are nice friendly approachable tutors and professors. my best regards to them. i also wonder what their conversations revolve around. it cannot be law all the time right. yet i cannot in my wildest imaginations see them talking about soccer, the other sex, or frivolous things that most people talk about while having lunch.
but then again, theyare human too, albeit very much more scholarly able and academically gifted. i suspect Ho hock lai supports manchester united. there was one wednesday, on the 28 Feb this year, when he was very humorous.
that lesson was on the admissibility in court of character evidence of sexual victims.
First funny thing he said:
"Today we are talking about sex. unfortunately, not the fun part." (WAHAHAHA) for those who dont know, ho hock lai is a serious looking prof. very very decent looking chinese man. he got his PhD (Cambridge), BCL (Oxford), and LLB (NUS). ok i realise this is not alone indicative. the point is he looks very not the type who would say that.
Second funy thing. While examining England’s and Wales provisions on rape:
"We will just look at England. Cos wales doesn’t matter. (he laughs heartily and turns towards the other prof, prof tey). Apart from Ryan gigs, wales does not matter. (laughs)
HOW FUNNY IS THAT! HO HOCK LAI MAKING A JOKE AT WALES EXPENSE! INVOLVING RYAN GIGGS EVEN!
Thought number 2:
listening to McFly and David Tao songs remind me of PGP and year 1 days. school was different, very different. sorry if i alwayas repeat this, but sometimes, i like to reminisce too. in that sense i am like kian teck. i miss my frens, the law frens who call themselves freaks. you guys are indeed.
Thought number 3:
I enjoyed the Harry Elias open house, welcome tea, or whatever you call it. the lawyers there seem friendly and approachable. the culture seems to place an equal premium on work and play. i would like to apply there.
to end off, i just wanna wish everybody good health. God bless you.
