A Series of Unfortunate Events: KL & Genting with the Freaks
Be warned. Bloody long entry ahead.
DAY 1
Reached novena at about 730AM. Shawn and I were late though cos there was a slight jam from my place. Mum fetched us. Bought a Hans sandwich. The bus was excellent. Booked by liangwei. $50 per head, 2 way. They were the biggest seats I have ever sat in. there was extra room, even for ME. I think could fit 2 sylvias. She sat next to me and I spoke to her a considerable bit in the bus. However I spent most time looking out, sleeping and listening to KEro’s ipod. It’s nice to reflect on a mad semester. At one of the stopovers, we filmed our first landing on Malaysian soil and I did a mini stance. All pictures are available at freakyfrens.blogspot.com. the videos are with kero though. They are wonderful. At that stopover, I met a very fierce cat which threatened to claw me if I did not stop saying SHO cute. And we had A&W there. Shiok coney dog and better than Singapore curly fries.
Entry into KL
It was my first time into KL. I love it, but didn’t expect it to be not so clean. I thought it would be better. But it’s about there la. I love the taxi drivers, very adventurous. Our lodging for the next 3 days 2 nights was FURAMA hotel in Chinatown. There is a counterpart in Singapore but I think the KL one was the poorer brother. Upon entry, we felt that the lobby was unusually warm. We were then greeted with a ‘Sorry Sir, we are facing power shortage right now’. Goodness! But you get what you pay for la seriously. Anyhow, we settled down and promptly caught a cab to KLCC. Hmmm…we had dim sum lunch there and rotiboy. Both quite good la. But it was nothing compared to the food that was awaiting us back at Chinatown. We also had a try at the luxury restrooms priced at 2RM each. Was ok, just a very nice and clean toilet with extra toilet paper and shaving cream and all that. Powder and all that kinda stuff, like what you have in country clubs, but not as nice. I expected something spacious. We spent the afternoon there but didn’t buy anything substantial save shawn who bought sony earphones.
Chinatown
Our first trip in Chinatown! Its like a supa packed pasar malam but everything is damn cheap. Lots of food too. A lot of duplicity. I was the first to be scolded. I asked the fella the watch how much, he say 170 I say how about 100 he then slowly lowered the price to 140, 130, 120, whilst I was making my way out of the shop saying I would look around first. After my 1st step out of the shop, his co-owner shouted: ‘FU%K you go back to your country’ and some other ramblings which I wasn’t that eager to hear in detail. Shumin was also scolded by some jewellery man, after she insisted on touching the necklace and him bringing it down, only to find it wasn’t to her liking. Haha. But it was all great fun and a good experience. Vic, shawn, and I all bought watched from this particular cos the guy gave great service. We are very happy boys. ‘alright ah, alright’ was the catchphrase. Too bad kero was sick the first night. However, it was a blessing in disguise. Lemme say why:
First we had dinner at some cze cha. It was ok la, we spent about 160RM for 7 dishes, including prawns and some other stuff. Was really just ok. But since kero was sick, we decided to tapow for him. And we decided to tapow porridge. And of course, the worse thing to do is to tapow for a sick brother and let him eat alone right? We decided to take the onus of accompanying him in his dinner/(our supper) and bought more than enough. We had satay (best i have every tried in the world), teh tarik(best i have every tried in the world), and beef noodles. And the porridge was incredible too. Oh my goodness. Better than Maxwell and Chinatown porridge. Seriously, these are the MUST TRYs. Then the girls came over and did their job: gave us a good stepping on and massage. And that was the first day, and the first night.
DAY 2.
The girls got up early to buy breakfast, which was good, cos we are usually hungry after an overnight fast(7-8 hours without food is no joke). The ba kwa bread is held in high regard by kero especially. But I am not a fan of ba kwa bread. Ok dress up, then we went sungei wang, it’s something like our far east. A very big far east la. Had lunch at the Noodlehouse. It’s at the entrance of sungei wang shopping centre. My personal advice: don’t bother trying. My beef brisket noodles was really not too good and the dim sum sucked. Baey didn’t finish her char siew noodles. Thereafter, the guys and girls split. We got most of our stuff from their FOS. Its fantastic. Inter alia(amongst others), I bought an Abercrombie purple sweater. According to shawn, it’s the seth cowen ‘look’. I don’t really know who seth cowen is, but when Sylvia saw the sweater, she was quite angry. That I was going to look like her seth cowen. I think she is mad. Anyhow, the guys had a good rest at this quaint little coffee-shop/café/furniture boutique at sungei wang 4th level. It is SHO cute. We took a short video there. Very cute. The guys ended up shopping more than the girls. And they had to wait for us at delifrance.
Dinner day 2
Ok. After all that shopping it was time for dinner. Our plan was to find the jap buffet. We walked about 25 mins. Yea it was very fun cos I like walking in foreign land and seeing how things work and all their streets and all that. And we walked into their shenton way and many nice restaurants. We found the targeted jap restaurant which looked really good. But they did not have a buffet. Alas. The owner/manager directed us to a place 10 mins away which had a jap buffet. Ok so we ate there. RM40 something I think. Was not too good la. But I had a lot of beef and that made me happy. I also like the salmon in their miso soup steamboat. Shiok. And yam ice cream. A touching moment was when my dad called me. He happened to be in KL too for one of his business trips. I seldom speak to my dad so it’s quite heart warming to speak to a loved one when you both are away from home but yet at different places. He asked where I was staying at and when I was leaving and all. I think he wanted to bring me to some place to eat and all that cos he is really familiar with the place. But due to our tight schedule, I could not meet him. Nonetheless it was wonderful having that conversation with him on the phone in that jap restaurant.
Supper day 2
Ok. We went back to the hotel, dumped our shopping and headed downstairs again to shop!!!!! Shiok. This was when I bought my watch and my mum and sis’ presents. I like the little LV pouch. So cute. Of cos, we had the marvelous teh tarik, porridge, satay again. And the dark hokkien mee too. Simply delicious. Dirty and oily. Just the way I like it. I love staying in Chinatown. This night, we were very tired, so after supper, it was bathe and sleep. And talk la. I don’t know what the girls talk about, but kero was damn freaking funny when he imitates his army frens and CSM. Since he doesn’t want his reputation to be tarnished, I shall not tell everyone that his impersonation of their vulgarities is bloody hilarious. We slept well, only that shawn woke up the next morning to find that he had been sleeping on a cockroach. Hahhaa. Poor cockroach was crushed to death in its attempt to share the bed with us. Oh and the morning view from our room is really ugly. It’s the damn rubbish centre downstairs and we face a block of flats or apartments, where naked guys sit and watch tv. Also, from my view on the bed, the school opposite the hotel looks like SEX IN CONFUCIOUS SCHOOL. It actually is SEC. CONFUCIOUS SCHOOL. It’s not my mind, it really does look like that. It’s quite strange cos the building looks like an old hdb block but there is actually a school being run. SHO CUTE.
Day 3
Up in the and we went for breakfast. I had wonton mee which was good and turned out to be famous. Even channel U from Singapore recommends it! I also ordered 10RM of chicken feet cos I thought they would want it. We have ordered chicken feet 2 days in a row and they all quite liked it especially ja-liy. Little did I know that none of them wanted it and they even left me and vic alone at the table and went off to another coffeeshop. So I had to eat the chicken feet myself. What the heck. I did not finish them. I finished my noodles in a hurry although there were good cos I wasn’t in the mood to eat already. Then we walked further and I sat down with kero shawn and Sylvia to have porridge. Then was some last minute shopping at Chinatown and their longan drink and roasted chestnuts are really good.
Bye Furama KL hello Genting
There were some problems at check-out which really pissed me off. WTH. We checked out and bought our tickets from puduraya station. A bustling station with everything cheap. Out tickets for a bus ride and cable car ride up and down kl and Genting only cost 14rm. That is bloody cheap. Cheaper than a sundae at baskin robbins. We were very lucky(or what I would God blessed) cos we got to the station at about 1210. There were 7 of us. The next bus leaving for genting was at 1230. So we had 20 mins. However, there were only 6 tickets available. Shit. So we were about to settle for the 130 bus when a woman came to return her 1230 ticket (or tiket in Malaysia). Thank GOD LIKE CRAZY!!!!!!. So the 7 of us took the bus and went off for the exciting cable car ride!!! I really liked the finding out tickets to genting thing cos it was very backpackerish and I had an enjoyable time finding the ticket station with vic.
Afternoon in genting
The cable car ride was thrilling for some of us. Some were having it for the first time. I went for it a couple of years ago so I was not that excited or afraid. Worse come to worse die loh. Was not in a very good mood anyway.
Our room was in the theme park hotel. Although it is further from the main body of restaurants and other hotels, it is damn near the theme park(duh) and it is damn cheap. Cheaper than furama but much nicer and cleaner. I would recommend it to anyone. If you want cheap and good, but not luxurious. It was really wonderful for its price. Even had a bathtub. And of cos the weather makes everything seem nicer.
We went off walking around, had KFC lunch, ice cream at baskin robbins and a karaoke session. Which was really fun. I had a go at all my favourite jacky cheung songs and jay chou songs. WOOHOO!!!! It was really funny and we had a blast of a time with ja-liy and kero singing. Vic proved that he really is quite a good singer. And Sylvia tee is karaoke queen! And my Cantonese impersonations, which I must say are quite good!Hahahaha. Yea it cost us 12rm in total per person for 2 hours. Quite cheap. Ok back to the room and dinner time!
Night in genting
Dinner was at the Indian restaurant called spice garden. I thought it was really great. I love Indian food and they do it really well. But it’s darn expensive. It was our most expensive meal in Malaysia, at rm220. But I adore their garlic naan and fish curry. It’s a must try. Too bad ja-liy cant eat curry. Or anything spicy. When we first entered the restaurant there was a guy singing really loudly. It was part of the ‘entertainment’ la, but really, it was too loud. And I did not know how to appreciate it. Thankfully he stopped!!!!!!!!! Just when our food arrived. And strangely enough, he started when we finished our meal. We couldn’t wait to get out! Hahahahahah.
Ok then FOS. Most of the stuff was the same as in Sungei Wang but they had some better pants and Bermudas. The girls’ stud was quite good too and shu and baey bought quite some stuff. I love FOS. I bought a black shirt this one. It was at this FOS that I hit the low point of the trip. I was really pissed off. Not so much angry, but mixed feelings of hurt, anger and disappointment. Humans are strange creatures aren’t they. It spoilt my entire night though I did not express it. I was seething throughout. But I have learnt how to mask my feelings. After FOS we went to the casino. The girls couldn’t get in so they went to this really nice restaurant and then coffee bean, where we joined them later in the night. It was really sad seeing people throw their money, rm100s, 200s, and 3 or 500s at the various tables. It’s obvious you will never win money at a casino. Why else would people open casinos? I mean, for 4d, where small sums of money are involved, ok la, I still can understand. But blackjack and Russian roulette where the minimum stakes are 200rm, it’s just plain stupidity. Sorry. My mother’s brothers and uncles have lost property through gambling. It’s one game you can never win. Anyway, kero and vic played a bit of jackpot. Well at first kero won 20rm but he lost it so he walked away safe, no loss no gain. At a certain point when he won a lot, he cashed his coins out and wanted to play another machine. This aunty then approached him and asked if she could have his coins for change cos she only had notes. It was obvious that it was not his coins she wanted. Cos she could have just changed at the counter. She wanted his ‘luck’. Sigh.
Vic however was slightly unlucky. He lost about rm40 I think. I think I know how these jackpot machines work. They will let you win a bit initially then you will continue at the machine but eventually you will lose everything, how can anyone think that you can ever win money at a machine made to make money from you? But anyway, it was quite interesting learning how the machines work and how to play the various jackpot games and learning how you win and how much you win and stuff. Some mean math for my mathematically challenged brain. We finished at 12 plus at joined the girls for awhile at coffee bean before retiring for the night.
Day 4
Shu kero baey and I had breakfast at the curry house. It sucks. I had rice, lousy cabbage, ok fried chicken, and teh tarik for 12.60rm. like shit man. We also did our last minute shopping at FOS. Ok check out, and then lunch at ‘lau di fang’ their food court, expensive. Then off to macs for some snacks, kero bought his beautiful pair of shoes(alright ah, alright), and we had baskin robbins. Lovely. Then we took some final photos. Ok then cable car ride which was slightly more exciting cos there was bad weather. So the carriage had to stop occasionally and everytime it did it would go up and down really quite a bit and that scared the life out of vic and shu. Hahahahahahhaha. Was not so funny when we came across the really rude bus driver who was bringing us back to KL. When we weren’t even late yet. But ok la. We were back at puduraya at 3pm so the girls and kero had a snack at the café in Ancasa Hotel whilst shawn vic and I had our final moments in Chinatown. Ok Ancasa Hotel is really great and it is at the edge of Chinatown. Better than Furama which is actually inside. Ancasa is really nice, posh-er, newer, and just a little more expensive. I highly recommend it to anyone who is going to KL. Michelle and gang stayed there so law people, you can ask them about it if you want. It is great. Shawn vic and I had bak kut teh which was ok. Very different from ours. We missed the porridge cos the guy only opens at 530pm but we had to be at our bus station place by 6pm so we had not enough time. What a waste. We love the porridge. As I said, best I have ever tried. Still, at least we managed to get the teh tarik. And catch the cab to buangkok or whatever that place is. On the way there, the cabbie( who had stayed in Singapore for some 17 years) told us about mid-valley. Damn. We missed it. Liangwei says that they have a lot of good stuff there. I’LL BE BACK.
Bye bye KL
Ok so it was back on our comfy bus and back to Singapore. The bus trip was particularly enjoyable cos there were very few people onboard and we took over the last 10 seats. Big comfy seats. We were really hungry by the time we reached novena and it was about 11pm I think. Kero shawn and I had supper at wee nam kee chicken rice. Shiok. Singapore is really clean.
Ok so this is what I enjoyed:
Chinatown’s dark hokkien mee, satay, porridge, wonton mee, wonderful teh tarik.
FOS.
Genting’s Spice Garden Indian restaurant.
I don’t want to repeat what I did not enjoy.
Overall, a great trip. Cant wait to go KL again and I want to go Bangkok after hearing what everyone has been saying about it. A more concise version of the trip is available at freakyfrens.blogspot.com, courtesy of shu. You can find photos there too. God bless.
